I. Course Description:

Adobe Photoshop, the professional image-editing standard, helps you work more efficiently, explore new creative options, and produce the highest quality images for print, the Web, and anywhere else. This course will cover the basics of file sizes and formats, the manipulation of photos, and creation of art from scratch. Topics to be covered will include: preparing images for print, color spaces, compression, type and layers, alpha channels, cloning, and an introduction to filters.

II. Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course, the students should be familiar with the tools of Photoshop and be able to apply techniques learned in basic projects to enhance photographs and create/design a printed page to include multiple elements. Professional workflow techniques and practices will be emphasized.

III. Course Requirements:

Basic working knowledge the Windows operating system, a desire to learn and time to practice outside of class.

It is also recommended that each student bring to class a USB Flash Drive containing the lesson files that are available with the course text book. Downloading and moving the files will be covered in class.

IV. Methods of Instruction:
  1. Course is instructor lead and will consist of lectures, demons, and guided tutorials.
  2. Reading assignments from selected books and internet sources.

VI. Assignments:

Weekly Assignments: Throughout this course students are expected to apply each lesson using their personal work to gain a better understanding of the tools and how they are applied outside of the structured lesson format.

Assignment #1 — Basic Image Corrections:

     Choose 5 of your own images and perform basic corrections consistent with skills and tools used to date. Demonstrate proper Photoshop techniques including global and local corrections, nondestructive editing, and use of appropriate tools for desired corrections. Submit before and after image files along with a written description of image discrepancies noted and the techniques and work flow used to correct discrepancies.
